“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
Matthew 18:20 ESV
Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
Psalm 22:3 ESV
Enthroned means to sit down, remain, dwell. When humans worship God, we’re inviting Him to sit down and dwell among us. He inhabits the praises of His people. Worship is an invitation. Around the world and throughout history, cultures have worshiped by doing what they think would draw in and please the one they worship.
If we invite someone to our house for dinner, we’re going to clean and straighten up and make our home pleasing and comfortable for that person. We’re going to prepare food that we hope they’ll enjoy. If we know they don’t like fish, we’re probably not going to prepare a sushi dinner. If we know our guest is gluten-free, even though we’re not a gluten-free household, Sako will prepare an amazing, entirely gluten-free dinner.
What is pleasing, comfortable, and inviting to one person may be very different for another. It’s the responsibility of the host to know the guest’s preferences and prepare accordingly. This is a picture of worship.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
Revelation 3:20 ESV
When we worship, we often talk about creating a family room experience and inviting in our Father God. Wellspring’s worship is an invitation to the Lord God to come sit down, remain, and dwell right here among us, His beloved children. When two, three, or more of us get together and worship the name of the Lord, He shows up in our midst and takes the seat of honor among us. He is the guest of honor in our worship. This is the truth of how worship works.
This is how worship works. Two or more people gather in the name of what or who they’re inviting and they give their attention and adoration by doing what pleases the invited, and guess what? The invited show up.
Who are you inviting into your life?
We need to aggressively uninvite the enemy from our lives and restore the seat of honor to the Lord Jesus Christ. In 2 Timothy 2 [2:25b-26 ESV], Paul’s says, “God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.”
the devil lays a snare —> people are captured —> captured people do the devil’s will —> God grants them repentance —> they receive knowledge of truth —> they come to their senses —> they escape from the snare of the devil
Now is the time to receive repentance from the Lord so that we can know truth and come to our senses. It’s time to open our eyes. It’s time to kick the demonic guests out of our lives and quit entertaining them. And it’s time to prepare our hearts and our homes for the pleasure of the guest of honor.
Make your worship an invitation to Jesus to come into your midst. Make your worship an invitation for your Father God to be seated right in front of you. Sing praise and create an atmosphere that honors Him and makes Him comfortable.
Let’s invite the Lord together!
