No More of This

Jesus told His disciples that the ministry was about to shift. In a previous conversation, He had told them to take nothing and to depend on the kindness of others. Now they would take their money and be ready to travel. He followed this with a Hebrew figure of speech, “If you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” This was a common warning of perilous times.

Unfortunately Jesus’ disciples took Him literally because they had been longing for a violent insurrection. When they excitedly responded with two swords, some translations have Jesus saying that it is enough or it is adequate. He’s not saying that all they needed was two swords. He was saying, “That’s enough of this talk.” The disciples continued being so focused on their expectations that they couldn’t understand Jesus. Later when the disciples were ready to rise up make war, even cutting off a man’s ear, Jesus rebuked them, commanding, “Stop! No more of this!” Then He miraculously healed the man’s ear.

That’s enough! Stop! No more of this! Do not be tempted to engage in violence in the natural. The true fight is in the spiritual realm, this where the leading aggressors dwell. Take hold of the sword of the Spirit which is the spoken word of God, engage the driving powers, and overcome them in the name of Yeshua. Strike the head and the body collapses underneath. War in the spiritual and heal in the natural.

Finally, become strong in the Lord and in the might of his strength. Put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the stratagems of the devil, because our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
